The crowded city of New York is probably the most urban on the planet. Like most large US cities, New York has massive traffic congestion problems. Owning a car for transportation in New York City does not make sense for most residents unless money is not an object. Monthly garage rental fees can be higher than those for apartments in other US cities. It is estimated that 80% of people in Manhattan do not own a car. Driving in Manhattan is tough but parking is the real nightmare.

New York City, unlike most major cities in the US, has a solid system of public transportation in New York City. About 55 % of New Yorkers use public transportation in New York City (subway or buses), another large portion travel by foot, bike or by taxi. People living in suburbs use the efficient train system to avoid the horrendous street traffic. Visitors in Manhattan should not even think about renting a car in New York City unless they are planning an excursion or small trip outside the city. As one of the most common New York City safety tips advised in almost any other place on earth, do not walk in isolated areas; stay around crowds. Rid yourself of any signs of being a tourist in an unfamiliar environment; New York vacation rentals help blend in as they tend to be in residential condo buildings. Make sure all your valuables you are holding are protected and secure. If you are wearing flashy jewelry, try to conceal them (i.e. turning rings so that gems face your palm or tucking necklace in your shirt).

New York Travel: New York City’s Architecture

Oct 06

Posted: under New York, United States.
Tags: , , ,

Manhattan is one of the world’s top tourist destinations. It may not be the world’s most beautiful city but it has a charisma that is reminiscent to its interesting history and New York City’s architecture. New York has significant buildings of different architectural styles and a number of internationally iconic buildings such as The Empire State Building, Woolworth Building, Chrysler Building and Seagram Building.

New York City’s architecture was strongly influenced by old Europe architecture, specifically the British and Dutch architecture. Townhomes called Brownstone can be seen in the most historic parts of Manhattan from Upper West side to the Lower East Side. Structures with this New York City’s architecture style were built with quality brick and stones and are appreciated for their elegance.

Low-rise buildings were built in the 1800’s and the early 1900’s. During the beginning of the 1920’s, the first skyscrapers were built as well as important art deco buildings. Then, the 70’s hi-rises were erected in phases following the real estate booms and busts.  Today, Manhattan is made up of about 5,500 hi rises making it first ranked place with the most hi-rises in the US and second in the world after Hong Kong. Many of the New York vacation apartment rentals are found in these hi-rises. You can also find a New York vacation apartment in any of the other kinds of buildings as well. You can find a New York vacation apartment in any building in any part of the city.

Visit New York: New York City Neighborhoods

Oct 06

Posted: under New York, United States.
Tags: ,

Understanding the New York City neighborhoods of Manhattan is crucial in understanding this wonderful city.   In order to make things easier, divide the city up into smaller New York City neighborhoods.

Category 1 (The largest neighborhoods):

  • Downtown
  • Midtown
  • Uptown

Category 2:

  • Lower East Side
  • Midtown
  • Upper East Side
  • Upper West Side

Category 3:

  • Battery Park
  • Wall Street (Financial Center)
  • China Town
  • Little Italy
  • Alphabet city
  • SoHo (South of Houston)
  • Tribeca (TRIangle BElow CAnal Street)
  • The Meatpacking district
  • East Village
  • Greenwich Village
  • Chelsea
  • Gramercy Park
  • Sutton Place
  • Washington Heights
  • Harlem

Some New York City neighborhoods are named after their geographical location (i.e. the Upper East Side); some are ethnically descriptive (i.e. Chinatown); and others are acronyms (i.e. TriBeCa for “TRIangle BElow CAnal Street” or SoHo for “SOuth of HOuston” or NoLIta for “NOrth of Little ITaly”. Alphabet City is named as such because it consists of Avenues A, B, C and D. Understanding this simple logic will help vacationers get to and from their New York vacation rentals without much confusion.

Some New York City neighborhoods, such as SoHo, are more commercial and known for upscale shopping. Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Alphabet City and the East Village have long been associated with the “Bohemian” subculture. Chelsea is a neighborhood with a large gay population, and recently a center of New York’s art industry and nightlife. Washington Heights is a vivacious neighborhood of immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Manhattan’s Chinatown has a dense population of people of Chinese descent. The Upper West Side has a reputation for being more intellectual and creative, in contrast to the old money and conservative Upper East Side, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the United States.

In Manhattan, uptown refers to the north (more specifically north-northeast) of 59th Street and downtown means south (south-southwest) of 14th Street. This differs from most American cities, where downtown refers to the central business district. Manhattan has two central business districts: the Financial District at the southern tip of the island and Midtown Manhattan. Midtown generally covers the area between uptown and downtown.

Fifth Avenue bisects Manhattan and acts as the line between east/west. It is not until north of 14th Street that nearly all east-west streets are numerically identified. Find New York vacation rentals in any of the New York City neighborhoods. The New York vacation rentals tend to be more affordable than hotels.
